Albert Park Pre-school Goes Green

Albert Park Pre-school is Australia’s First Certified Carbon Neutral Kindergarten

Albert Park Pre-school is a community kindergarten located in the bayside suburb of Albert Park in Melbourne. Recently they achieved a remarkable feat – becoming Australia’s first certified carbon neutral kindergarten.

The kindergarten’s philosophy celebrates a commitment to the wellbeing of our world and to each other and also reflects the belief that youth play a pivotal role in forming a healthy, sustainable future.

To make this commitment visible to the community, the kindergarten partnered with the Sustainability Department at City of Port Phillip to identify and implement opportunities to reduce emissions, in the pursuit of achieving carbon neutral status. This led to the installation of solar panels, battery storage, a solar heat pump, energy efficient LED lighting supplied by Middy’s and energy efficient fans from Ventair.

The children actively participate by reading meters, distributing organic waste amongst the four worm farms on site, and caring for the community garden.

Despite being one of the smaller and newer additions to the Carbon Neutral Network, Albert Park Pre-school is pursuing a new goal of culminating a sustainable learning community and is proud to partner with local schools in pursuit of this vision.

Albert Park Pre-school is sincerely grateful to the families, community partners and the City of Port Phillip for their contributions to bring the dream of carbon neutral certification to reality.

We would like to thank Jenny Whelan from Albert Park Pre-school for allowing Middy’s to get involved in this process.
